  1. I like this graphic, but wonder if it falls a little short? Can’t a social extranet and social intranet be combined into one system? Isn’t that ESN at it’s highest and best use?

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, I completely agree – the best ESNs combine both the middle and lower layers of the graphic. Indeed, this is precisely what my company’s product, Clearvale, enables. The graphic does not mean to imply you need separate products for each layer – merely to indicate that each layer has its own characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. A single network providing both social intranet and social extranet would need to address the internal and external audiences separately, and consider the relationship between the two.

      In theory, it is also possible for a single network to provide presence for all three layers, but I am not aware of products that do this. There are some that cover the middle layer and underpin parts of the company’s presence on the top layer, but these typically don’t extend down to the social intranet layer.
